About My Business:

ACADEMY OF SPECIAL DREAMS FOUNDATION California nonprofit corporation VISION The Academy of Special Dreams Foundation strives to build a society in which all persons, regardless of their disabilities, will have full and equal opportunities to express their talents and to be successful in the Arts. MISSION The mission of the Academy of Special Dreams Foundation is to increase public awareness, appreciation and recognition of the creative talents of people with disabilities by providing opportunities that encourage, promote and showcase their artistic expressions. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE People with physical or mental disabilities have long been precluded from fully participating in all aspects of society, sadly sometimes because of purposeful discrimination. Despite the historic passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990, and most recently with the 2008 amendments to the ADA, there still is much to do to create public awareness that physical and mental disabilities should not diminish a person's right to fully participate in our society. In the field of the Arts, the Academy of Special Dreams Foundation believes there is an untapped and wonderful world of creativity yearning to be discovered among people with disabilities. The Academy's mission to increase public awareness, appreciation and recognition of the creative talents of those in the special needs community addresses and seeks to fill a significant gap in services for these artists who many times face daunting obstacles just to produce their works of Art. PROGRAMS AND SERVICES The Academy of Special Dreams Foundation achieves its mission to increase public awareness, appreciation and recognition of the creative talents of people with disabilities in three principal ways: (i) organizing and administering open-call competitions to encourage those in the special needs community to express themselves through various mediums of Art; (ii) arranging for scholarships, cash awards and other financial support for disabled artists to promote their further participation in the Arts; and (iii) hosting web-based virtual galleries of Art and producing exhibitions and videos to showcase the artistic expressions of artists with disabilities. Public Awareness to Encourage Artists with Disabilities The Academy of Special Dreams Foundation seeks to increase public awareness of the creative talents of people with disabilities. The Academy will organize and administer semi-annual web-based opportunities for those in the special needs community to express themselves in competitive short film, creative writing and visual arts projects. All submissions from participants will be judged for creativity, uniqueness and originality by a designated panel of their peers and volunteers working with the special needs community. Moreover, the Academy will organize periodic events throughout the year to connect with other artists and Art collectors, to make connections with art galleries offline, and to build relationships in the artistic community to bring awareness of the special needs community. Finally, the Academy's website will provide links to videos on motivational speakers in the Arts as well as health, technology and leadership development videos on how to persevere, manage and deal with physical and mental challenges. Public Appreciation to Promote Artists with Disabilities The Academy of Special Dreams Foundation will arrange for the financial support of artists with disabilities to further their participation and progress in the Arts. The Academy itself will provide up to 50 scholarships and cash awards annually to artists with disabilities though its web-based opportunities for those in the special needs community to express themselves in competitive short film, creative writing and visual arts projects. Also, the Academy will seek collaborations with other community-based organizations, for-profit businesses, school districts, colleges and universities to support emerging artists and to sponsor and underwrite Art exhibitions and events, and to provide other resources such as online workshops in Art. The Academy will reach out to work with employment agencies to make more accessible equal job opportunities and trainings for the special needs community. Public Recognition to Showcase Artists with Disabilities The Academy of Special Dreams Foundation is committed to increasing public recognition of the artistic expressions of artists with disabilities. The Academy will create and sustain an online community in which the works of Art created by people with disabilities will be featured in dedicated virtual galleries to be shared with and appreciated by everyone year-round. The Academy will provide free hosting for up to 50 artists to showcase their Art. The Academy will sponsor receptions in the community for the winners of the web-based competitions each of whom will be recognized and eligible for scholarships and cash awards in "BLUE" carpet events. In addition, the Academy's website will feature short films and video interviews that profile the lives of artists with disabilities and their dreams to become successful in life despite their physical or mental challenges.
