About My Business:

Alternative Teaching ( provides behavior management consulting services for families and professionals. The heart of the program is our “in-home” (or virtual in-home) behavior management services for parents who have children with moderate to severe behavioral issues. The traditional practice with these children is to take them to outpatient therapy, however the research shows that it is minimally effective and that parent training is much more effective. Because parents are motivated for change in the home, parents are the ideal client. We assist them in changing the environment in their home and their children adjust to the new environment. Because we are working with the parents, we can do in weeks what therapy can’t do in months or years. What parents like: -10 sessions over the course of 6 months for a flat rate. -After 4 sessions (about 1 month), if the family does not find that the program is working (by their definition of “working”, not ours) or they just don’t want to continue for any reason, they will never receive a bill from us (in essence, they would get the first 4 sessions for free and the only risk for them is their time). This keeps us at least 50% invested in making sure that they are successful and constantly forces us to innovate to be more efficient and effective. -The program comes with unlimited phone consultation with their behaviorist. We want them to call us when the child is having problems. We will then walk them through how to address it in the moment. The more the family calls, the quicker they learn the program, the less often the need to call. -Unlike therapy, we are motivated to make sure that parents learn the program and no longer need us. In traditional therapy, there is a conflict of interest in that if the client/family gets better, the therapist ends up losing that source of income. -The program in non-confrontational and we don’t need the child’s cooperation (unlike traditional therapy).
