She urges everyone to become informed medical consumers and advocates to ensure that people from all cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds receive state-of-the art cancer screening and health education, are diagnosed early and treated with no less than the highest standard of care.
Mrs. Mullen’s career as a nonprofit, health care and public policy consultant and patient advocate has led her to hold many esteemed positions and to create and lead nationally acclaimed cancer care programs and public policy initiatives in the fields of cancer care, patient and physician education, patient advocacy, cancer research, public health, health care policy and public policy.
Mrs. Mullen is the co-founder of the Breast Cancer Research Stamp, successfully lobbying the United States Congress for the creation and issuance of the first fundraising stamp in U.S. history; raising over $72 million to date for biomedical research since the stamp’s first day of issuance in late July 1998. Betsy also has wide-ranging experience and expertise in breast cancer care programs and psychosocial support, as well as cultural competency and informed consent for diverse patient and health care provider populations. Betsy’s experience as a patient advocate in the field of women’s cancers and the health care industry, combined with her own experience as a breast cancer survivor, have provided her with a deep understanding of the needs, questions and concerns that women have about cancer and how they can fight the disease and get involved to make a difference.
