About My Business:

From an article written for the Artful Mind in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts: It may appear that the arts indie networking hub for creatives has just simply appeared out of the blue on the regional arts scene, but this fledgling spirited vanguard of outreach and advocacy has been a project in the making for quite some time building and developing as a nurturing arts presence under the watchful guidance of founder Leo Mazzeo. Jack-of-all-trades and wearer of many hats within the creative community, Mazzeo formally began this latest concerted effort this past November. It builds upon previous endeavors that include co-founding, managing, and creating the initial architecture of Pittsfield’s First Fridays Artswalk, managing various regional visual arts exhibition spaces, website creation and graphic design work, exhibiting his fine art oil paintings and photography, and serving on area arts organization boards. The main areas of focus for the arts indie project include a blog, which covers arts events and happenings in the immediate Berkshire County vicinity and beyond, affordable website creation and graphics design for artists, performers, and arts-minded businesses, an Artists Directory that highlights some of the highly-talented artists in the region, and informal networking meetings that take place casually each month in a leisurely setting. All of these efforts work in a collaborative way to promote, advance, and enhance the creative experience for artists, patrons, and supporters living, visiting, and working in the region. From the blogging perspective, Mazzeo covers a broad range of arts-related subject matter, but primarily focuses on larger group exhibits and performances as opposed to solo efforts. The blog is posted often as a pre-event promotion as well as a follow-up piece that serves to bring greater public awareness and notice of engaging arts activities in the area. In addition to features written specifically for the arts indie blog, Mazzeo also currently contributes as the arts and entertainment writer for Berkshire Family Focus and the Berkshire Visitor's Bureau. These pieces first appear in their respective outlets and then are rerun on the arts indie blog itself. Besides appearing on the arts indie website, the blog also is distributed via RSS feed to an extensive subscriber list. For those interested in receiving the feed via e-mail, there is a signup form on the arts indie website. In further collaborative fashion, guest contributors are also invited to submit work and to help create content for the blog. Past contributors include artists Grier Horner and Scott Taylor and photographers Denise B Chandler and Susan Geller. From the website building perspective, Mazzeo’s client base is steadily growing from a solid high-profile base, which includes the Berkshire Art Association, well-recognized Pittsfield-based artist Scott Taylor, emerging fine art photographer Denise B Chandler, theatre arts instructor and production coordinator Deirdre Flynn Sullivan, and several others from the creative community. Mazzeo’s design fee is modest and he provides the client with a neat, clean, affordable website that is attractive, concise, and easy to navigate. The arts indie Artists Directory is a relatively new feature. Each artist has a page on the arts indie website that includes an image of their work, a biography/artist statement/curriculum vitae, or any combination of text that the artist prefers, and the artist’s contact information, which generally includes a phone number, e-mail address, and a link to the artist’s website. The image and accompanying text are also included in an album on the arts indie Facebook page. The listing and processing fee to be a part of this directory is $25/year. Because of the extensive readership of the blog and solid Facebook/Twitter traffic, the directory gets a great deal of notice. Artists interested in joining the directory may visit the website for more information and/or contact Mazzeo at Another new feature is a standing monthly networking meeting in Pittsfield on every Thursday after the first Friday of every month. The meeting is in a casual setting and informal, but offers a great opportunity to chat with area creatives about projects that are of concern. These meetings are held at Thistle and Mirth, 44 West Street, Pittsfield from 5PM on until about 8PM. An accompanying Facebook group called Arts in Conference has been set up to facilitate community communications. Though Mazzeo is the founder and primary organizing presence behind arts indie, he sees the project as an entity of the arts community and far from a one-person effort. Each piece builds upon the other and in this project, the whole is absolutely greater than the sum of its parts. For more information on the project and to discuss joining the Artists Directory, working on website and graphics creation, the monthly Arts in Conference meetings, or contributing to working on the blog, please contact Leo Mazzeo at or visit the website at
