About My Business:

P.A.V.E.L. is an association for parents with children who suffer from cancer, leukemia or grave anaemias. It was founded in 10th of May 1996 in order to improve the lives of children and young people with cancer, leukemia or grave anemia by providing information, moral, psychological and material support and also to sustain the speciality clinics. Association P.A.V.E.L. is a member of: ICCCPO (International Confederation of Childhood Cancer Parent Organizations), UICC (International Union Against Cancer), ECPC (European Cancer Patient Coalition), IAPO (International Alliance of Patients´ Organizations), HOPE (Hospital Organization of Pedagogues in Europe), member associate of SIOPE (an European organization of nurses and doctors in pediatric oncology), FABC (Federatia Asociatiilor Bolnavilor de Cancer) and member of APSR (Alianta pentru Sanatate din Romania). Every year, around of 500 children and young people are new diagnosed with cancer and there are around of 5,000. In Romania, the average cure these sick children is about 30-70%, depending on the specific disease. In Bucharest are treated over 65% of these children and they come from all the country and Association P.A.V.E.L. is among the most involved and few ones in Romania offering various direct support to children with cancer and their families. The needs of children suffering from cancer are multiple, ranging from the need of affection to the need for financial resources for diagnosis and treatment, and from the play therapy program in need to food and daily hygiene. There are very grave problems regarding the lack of some important medicines, the poverty of many families with a ill child and their hardship to face to the costs of a treatment and a proper diet. A multi-disciplinary approach to the management of pediatric cancer that includes psychosocial support services from the time of diagnosis improves quality of life, sophisticated psychosocial support may not be routine or available in many institutions in Romania. A series of initiatives were and are undertaken by Association P.A.V.E.L. that are directed towards integrating psychosocial intervention as an essential component of the overall treatment strategies for children and adolescents with cancer. Although Association P.A.V.E.L. cannot solve the problems every family faces when a child is ill, with your help, we can continue to make a profound difference in their lives and in our communities. A diagnosis of cancer throws a family into chaos. Our Pediatric Oncology Program provides a ray of hope to those families. Yet, as broad as our reach is, we want to help more families of children with cancer. Every day, we receive requests for help from families in need, from whole country. We have a lot of programs and projects for support of families with children with cancer (accredited services as: psycho- social support, medical information, material and financial support (we help the families to buy some needed medicines which can’ t be found in the country, to pay for some medical investigations (MRI, CT, PET CT), for prosthesis,..), free housing for families with a ill child during hospitalization, play therapy, hospital school (a recent program), advocacy activities in Romania and abroad, organizing events for children and young people in and out of hospitals (celebrations, trips, camps,..), participation and organizing humanitarian and prevention campaigns, publishing information booklets, organizing conferences in onco pediatrics, finding donors and financing the improvement of the conditions in Romanian hospitals (onco pediatrics wards), .. Besides material, emotional support, educational and entertainment activities like trips with ill children, organizing festivities for children in hospitals, and many others, our association has launched and managed over many years now the following permanent programs: - "P.A.V.E.L. Parents’ House" providing free housing, from 1998, for the parents that come with their children from other cities in Bucharest, for medical treatment or for medical check-ups; - “P.A.V.E.L. Playrooms" (play therapy in hospitals, for children with cancer) at the onco - pediatrics wards of the hospitals: M.S.Curie (Budimex) and Oncologic Institute „Prof. Dr. Al. Trestioreanu”, Bucharest; - "P.A.V.E.L. Resources and Services Center" - a center for free information (cancer helpline), social assistance, psychological, legal and health care consultancy for families with children with cancer (in partnership with the Oncologic Institute of Bucharest); - "Hospital School " (since 2012) in the hospitals: Oncologic Institute and Fundeni Clinical Institute; for the children and young people long hospitalized and who, because of this loose the school year, the chance for a better future and even the contact with friends (employing few teachers who would help the children to continue their studies) Target-groups: children and young people with oncologic diagnosis, age between 0-26 years old and their families. We are active in the hospitals (Oncologic Institute “Prof. Dr. Alex. Trestioreanu”, Clinical Institute Fundeni, Children Hospital “M. S. Curie”) from Bucharest, with oncologic and hematologic pediatric wards. In Bucharest there are treated over 65% of these children and they come from all over the country and Association P.A.V.E.L. is among the very few ones in Romania offering various support to children, teens and young people with cancer and their families. Experience and Competence in Projects Since 1996 and up to the present date, P.A.V.E.L. Association has been involved in the following projects: - “Parents’ House” was initiated in 1998 with the purpose of accommodating, free of charge, the parents coming with children with cancer to periodical check-ups or to hospitalize them. - “Building the future for the Romanian children”, a project won through the international competition “My Child Matters” and co-financed for a year by UICC organization (International Union against Cancer) and Sanofi Aventis Company. This project aimed to increase the degree of knowledge and awareness concerning the issue of the children with cancer, by creating and administrating the Resources and Services Center P.A.V.E.L. for children and parents inside the Oncology Institute of Bucharest. This is the first and only center of this sort in the country for patients with cancer. The project is based on offering the following facilities: information, lobby and advocacy, assistance on accessing the medical and psycho-social services, psychological and social counseling. - “Integrated Services for Children and Adolescents with Oncologic and Hematologic Illnesses” and “I have cancer and I am sentenced to...life!”, carried on at the Oncological Institute of Bucharest, at the Emergency Hospital for children Marie-Curie in Bucharest and at the Clinical Institute Fundeni – Bucharest. These have led to the annual improvement of life for 320 families which have or have had a child with cancer, by assuring a continuous process of information, social assistance, financial support, psychological counseling and leisure-services inside or outside the hospital (camps, excursions, cultural and sport events). - We support the families when they ask for our help or when the doctor suggests us to, by contacting hospitals and specialty clinics from Romania and abroad. Thus, many families have benefited from our help, either through counseling or by coming in contact with clinics from abroad and having prepared by us all the medical papers needed. Before entering EU, we could also send a few cases abroad for free of charge investigation and treatment. P.A.V.E.L. Association has helped many children and young people to get cancer treatment or medical investigation abroad. Moreover, we offer material support (depending on our organization´s financial possibilities), buying food (for two years it was possible for us to provide nourishment to the parents who stay with their children or teens in the hospital), medicine (during one year, due to the sponsorships, we were able to financially support all the urgent cases with the medicine or medical investigations (CT, MRI, ..) required. We have also tried to assure the families in financial difficulty the medicine required for their child (tens of sick children benefited from this) as well as wheel chair. In the past 3 years we distributed free of charge: wigs, wheel chairs, over 700 breast prosthesis for adult patients, clothing and other goods. - “Therapy through Art and Playing” (present, since 2002) – project through which the children hospitalized in the Pediatric Oncology Units of the Oncological Institute of Bucharest, Emergency Hospital for Children Marie-Curie – Bucharest, Clinical Institute Fundeni, Bucharest, registered in the programme “Playing Room P.A.V.E.L.”, have annually been offered integrated services of play-therapy and art-therapy, with immediate effects on their response to treatment. - "Hospital School " (since 2012) in the hospitals: Oncologic Institute and Fundeni Clinical Institute; for the children and young people long hospitalized and who, because of this loose the school year, the chance for a better future and even the contact with friends (employing few teachers who would help the children to continue their studies) - The national campaign “Childhood Cancer Signs and Symptoms awareness campaign” from the 1st of July,2010 until the 1st of November, 2010, in 4 districts, ended with a conference in Bucharest. The project was made possible due to the support received from UICC (International Union against Cancer) within the programme “Cancer Capacity Building Fund”. The main objectives of the project were: 1.To develop a package of specific informational materials on childhood cancer with focus on importance of warning signs and early detection addressed to parents and pediatricians; 2. To widely distribute the information in four regions of the country; 3. To run awareness campaigns through workshops, conferences and media. The direct beneficiaries of the seminaries in the 4 districts were more than 150 individuals involved in this discipline (generalist doctors, specialists in the psycho-social field, parents, teachers, etc) and more than 80 individuals invited at the conference of November, 9th,2010, “Signs of Cancer at Children”. - The Improvement of the conditions in Romanian hospitals through finding donors and financing In the course of a few years, with the help of the donors attracted by P.A.V.E.L Association, the following accomplishments were made: - obtaining supplies of hospital furniture and medical equipments for the units of Pediatric Oncology and Hematology from the Clinical Institute Fundeni at Emergency Hospital for Children Marie-Curie – Bucharest and the Oncology Institute “Prof. Doc. Alexandru Trestioreanu” in Bucharest; - rearranging the canteen and relaxation zone for the parents in the Pediatric Oncology Units of The Oncology Institute of Bucharest and Emergency Hospital for Children Marie-Curie – Bucharest; - creating and/ or refurbishing playrooms in 4 oncologic and hematologic wards, from hospitals of Bucharest. - creating and furnishing a space for playing and relaxing outside in the yard of the Oncology Institute “Prof. Doc. Alexandru Trestioreanu” in Bucharest. This project helps the children, the parents of children with cancer, as well as the adult hospitalized patients and their families. - Organizing various events for the sick or cured children (we organize festivals /parties for the big events of the year: Christmas, Easter, June 1 (Child´s Day), February 15 – The International Day of Children with Cancer). We also celebrate birthdays, we organize trips, camps, displays of the children´s paintings and other handmade projects. Participating in humanitarian campaigns, concerts, conferences etc., for the children with cancer. - Advocacy activities in Romania and abroad for the children and young people with cancer: militating in favor of the homologation of the medicine they need to take, but impossible to find in Romania, and also of the improvement of their life conditions and medical treatment. For example, in 2007, there was a protest meeting where the organization requested the Health Ministry to find a solution for the lack of cancer medicine in hospitals and even in the whole country. During many national and international conferences, P.A.V.E.L. representatives and cancer survivors supported and spoke for the children with cancer from Romania and told the organizations and authorities there about the status of the sick children in our country. They established relations with similar organizations, specialists in onco pediatrics, militating for the rights of the young patients. - Publishing brochures and leaflets informing people about cancer, patients ´rights, diet and preventive measures. We created a website: and www.asociatiapavel.ro - Organizing national conferences in pediatric oncology and hematology in 2010, 2011 and 2012 (in 2012, the conference was: 'The Multidisciplinary Assistance of Children and Teenagers with Cancer'; its aim: to identify concrete solutions in order to improve the situation of children and young people with cancer in Romania, by matching the four entities involved: authorities – doctors – patient associations - companies) Our representatives, survivors and team members have participated in conferences, meetings, seminars and trainings in and outside the country. During these events we exchanged experience and created useful networks with other organizations. Appreciation for the activities of the organization: - The prize for “Project of the Association with the greatest addressability”, Medica Festivity – IIIrd edition, 2011; - The “Prize for the most Implicated Association of Patients”, at the Sanatatea TV Festivity, on the 9th and 4th of December, 2012 and 2008; - September 24, 2007, the P.A.V.E.L. website received the second prize during "2007 Cancer on the Internet Award and Mention of Honour", organised by the European School of Oncology and Novartis, the Pharmaceutical Company. The prize award took place during the conference "ESO Cancer on the Internet Observatory" in Barcelona, Spain. - Various presentations in mass-media on the activities P.A.V.E.L. Association undergoes. Future projects: - to continue the actual projects and keep the team of specialist (12 employees, mostly, part-time) - acquiring a house with garden for a camp and relaxation house for children with cancer, for survivors and their families, in a nice countryside area, near mountains and forests.
