I quit my job as a countywide newspaper editor in the early 2000s. My launch to senior editor was mostly by default because of the revolving doors at the other three papers in the group. All that went down after I’d served as a recycling coordinator in a major metropolitan area for a dozen years, promoted concerts before that, and worked for a few PR firms when I first graduated from college. My press releases used to run verbatim; I took it for granted. My bachelor’s degree in Journalism/Public Relations (that was the official title) served me well. It wasn’t until I became an editor that I realized organizations did not receive the attention they deserved because they did not know how to effectively work with humans in the media. I, like most of my peers, was a hard-working, well-meaning human struggling against an avalanche of demands — and crappy press releases delivered in every wrong way. I cut myself loose to go on a mission to transform what we read, see and hear in the media — one press release at a time. Although I’ve successfully done that type of work with clients during the last 12+ years, market demand in the early days of my business was for website content. I did what all the gurus now say to not do: I followed the money. Funny thing is, I found I loved helping my clients craft clear content. My gift of deep listening, coupled with my reporter/editor skills and love of all things linguistics, words and writing, made it easy — and fun. The bulk of my work to this day remains website content and marketing material, but ghost blogging is gaining ground. If we work together, I’ll encourage you to think about how your words are landing in the world of your reader. We’ll make sure your words deliver the results you want, sooner than you expected, with more ease than you thought was possible.
