About My Business:


Seattle and Brooklyn-based Jessica Lurie is and award-winning multi-instrumentalist and composer. Her music is poised between creative jazz, rock, folk and avant-garde and improvisation, weaving tempestuous vocal melodies and eclectic instrumentation. She performs on saxophones, flute, clarinet, voice and accordion. Her 2012 CD, Megaphone Heart, earned 4.5 stars in Downbeat and made several top ten lists. She co-leads the Tiptons Saxophone Quartet and Drums with Amy Denio (twenty years strong!), and is a composing and performing member with NYC-based bands Unemployed Fortune Tellers, Sephardic group Sophie Salonika, La Buya, ZIon80 Jewish Afro-Beat Big band and the Ayn Sof Arkestra. Her newest composer/improvisational collaborative project is a flute quartet featuring Robert Dick, Jamie Baum and Elsa Nilsson that will be premiering in late Spring 2014. As a side-person, composer and collaborator, Jessica is featured on over 50 recordings. She has worked with international artists including Fred Frith, David Krakauer, Bill Frisell, Chuck D & The Fine Arts Militia, The Indigo Girls, Mark Ribot, Karl Denson, Frank London, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Vinicio Caposella, Otto Lechner, Nels Cline, Amy Denio, Jacob Fred Jazz Odessy, Sleater Kinney, Kenny Wolleson, Bernie Worrell and Ivan Neville. She composes and records for multi-media, dance, theater and film, and has collaborated on over 30 multi-media works and performances with visual artist Danijel Zezelj, NYC's Great Small Works and Circus Amok. Jessica's Teaching Artist experience is extensive. She has over 15 years experience as a private Music Instructor for grades k-12 and adult, individual, workshop and master class settings, teaching flute, saxophone, voice, piano and clarinet technique, music theory, improvisation and composition in the US and Europe. She is the lead designer of several creative music residency programs, including: Yo! Poetry, facilitating student generated poetry, music and movement and final performance (2009-present); Visible Song collaborative workshop, combining student-generated music composition and visual art (2009); Compose Yourself: Improvisation and Conduction Music Workshops (2006 -present); Stories and Soundtracks, connecting student music and stories through student created Public Service Announcements, including creating dialogues, graphic notation, digital scoring with Garage band, acting and recording (2013). Jessica has received support for composition by: Percussia Ensemble; Sundance Composer's Fellowship; Circus Amok; Great Small Works; Seattle and King County, Washington Arts Commissions; Artist Trust; Artslink; National Endowment for the Arts; and the Brooklyn Arts Commission among others.
