John Hidalgo earned the BA in music at Tulane University and the MA in music composition at California State University, East Bay. His first orchestral work, 'Song for O’Carolan,' was runner-up in the 2003 Foundation Orchestra Association’s composition competition; his first work as a graduate student at CSUEB, 'Lingua Franca Variations,' was premiered at the 2005 Glenn Glasow Memorial Concert; his three settings of traditional carols were commissioned and premiered by the Menlo Park Chorus in 2006. More recently, his 'Meditation on a Rumi Quattrain' was commissioned and premiered by the Contra Costa Chamber Orchestra in 2009 and 'Three Rivers (at the Edge of the Underworld)' was premiered at the 2009 Glenn Glasow Memorial Concert. Born and raised in New Orleans, John played music professionally in that city for many years. In the 1980s, he moved to Los Angeles where he wrote film and television screenplays, one of which was runner-up for the Diane Thomas Screenwriting Award at UCLA. Since 1990, John has taught and designed curriculum and courses for post-secondary education in theoretical and applied technology, including network protocols and design, and the use of technology in music composition, performance, production, and publishing. Until recently, he served as a lecturer in music, audio production, and film scoring at California State University, East Bay and at Gavilan College.
