About My Business:

The field of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy is growing as an adjunct to dental and medical treatment, internationally. This therapy helps to increase the length of a short upper lip, decrease a long, floppy, lower lip, close an open bite (where teeth do not meet), increase lip competence (closure), change tongue rest posture from low in the mouth to the palate (roof of the mouth), increase nasal breathing, help to resolve snoring and mild sleep apnea, improve unintelligible speech, and improve the cosmetic appearance of the face. My practice provides orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT). Orofacial myology is a science that studies the muscles of the mouth and face and body posture. A common disorder familiar to the public is “tongue thrusting”, where the tongue rests against or between the front or side teeth during swallowing rather than resting in the palate. This disorder is generally accompanied by inappropriate function of the muscles of the tongue, lips, jaw and face. Abnormal speech patterns may be observed. Tongue thrusting frequently occurs with a low, forward resting posture of the tongue and open lips. Just as orthodontic braces can gradually move teeth, abnormal postures and functions in the mouth can negatively influence dental growth causing malocclusion (incorrectly positioned teeth, an improper bite relationship between the teeth in the upper and lower arches, or malformation of the bone of the dental arches), slow orthodontic treatment and may cause orthodontic relapse and other functional issues such as temporomandibular joint dysfunction. Many children and adults also present with an open mouth rest posture which can be related to allergies and/or asthma. This open mouth posture can lead to the possibility of snoring and sleep apnea, two issues of great health concern. Therapy usually takes 8-12 visits and is highly effective with only 3-5 minutes of facial exercising three times a day!
