About My Business:


I have over 25 years experience in building and managing IT departments for small to medium businesses. I am quite comfortable in this environment where I get to wear many hats. I consider all employees as clients, even though I may be a fellow employee, and like to manage client (internal or external) relationships using what I call RTB sessions. A brief description of this is a core group of stakeholders in the business meet periodically (I had 1 client meet every week for 2.5 yrs, most meet monthly) to discuss issues in the business and brainstorm solutions. Other employees are brought in as needed. There are many advantages of this process. It gets the people talking to each other. Many 'issues' are self-inflicted by the process being used and can easily be resolved by a small change to the process. This happens when one stakeholder brings up an 'issue' and another (in the room) says something like "Oh, that's a problem for you? What if we did it 'this' way?" It focuses everyone's attention on the relative importance of individual issues and allows prioritization in line with corporate goals. It involves the stakeholders in the collaborative 'solutioneering' to address the issue - virtually ensuring success. It also involves people accepting actions on them with deadlines and the group holds them accountable. In other words, it gets things done. I have conducted a broad range of projects, and a significant number simultaneous or overlapping. A sampling (in no particular order) of the types of projects I managed is listed below. If there are any types you want to know more of/about, I would be happy to provide additional instances and/or details. Infrastructure projects - complete rebuilding, including the server room w/HVAC, cable plant, rack equipment (routers, switches, etc), telephony equipment (both traditional and VoIP) and services (including some unique customer service capabilities), servers (separate box or virtualized), and desktop/mobile equipment. Software development projects - including major (ERP type) 'home grown' niche market web applications to ERP system supplements, to system integration, and all the way down to small, custom purpose apps. Social Media projects - determining what is available, how best to use them (or not), unifying a strategy and building a unified approach. System utilization improvement - getting more out of the systems already in place. Business process improvement (an integral part of daily life). Some important aspects of my philosophy include: When someone says "think outside the box", I say "what box?" I believe in cost effective solutions tailored to the individual objective - I do not try to use a hammer to fix everything. I do not have 'favorite tools' that I try to use everywhere. I approach every situation as unique. I believe that you can have the best 'solution' in the world but, if you don't have "buy-in", it will not work. Including the people who will have to use the 'solution' in building it is the best way to ensure success. "If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."
