About My Business:

Charles David Smart A Kansas City Guitar Man Whether ministering with widely diverse Christian fellowships (such as Robert Schuman Ministries’ Crystal Cathedral), picking backstage at Nashville’s Grand Ol’ Opry, jamming in the family pubs of Ireland or performing in leading American university concert halls, multi-styled, award winning, Nashville recording guitarist Charles David Smart’s real love for the Lord is shown completely through his music with passion and energy. • 2010 King Cat Christian Music Award Nominee (Best Instrumentalist) • 2008 Film Composer: Baby Sophie and Friends • 2008 Kansas City Christian Music Association Award Instrumentalist of the Year • 2007 Kansas City Christian Music Association Award Instrumentalist of the Year • 2005 Kansas Federation of Music Clubs’ Musician of the Year, • Pro-Memberships: American Federation of Musicians, Kansas City Guitar Society, Kansas City Christian Music Association, Western Music Association, American Society of Composers and Producers (ASCAP) • M.A., Composition, Middle Tennessee State University (Murfreesboro/Nashville), B.A, Composition/Musical Theatre, Ottawa University, Additional Studies (John Brown University, Independence Community College, Johnson County Community College, University of Oregon/Eugene) • Guitar Teachers: Bill Yellverton (MTSU), Mike David, John Koshing, Bill Hulse (private) • Composition/Arranging: Thom Hutchison (MTSU), Bill Kloster (OU), Dale Casteel (ICC) After hearing a high school band perform The Peter Gunn Theme (Mancini) at an elementary school assembly with its driving, relentless guitar line, David began playing guitar at age 12 in the world filled with guitar groups (the Beatles to the Monkees). He joined his first garage band at three months later and joined the American Federation of Musicians three years later. David attended a very musical public school which encouraged significant performing opportunities. (His high school vice-principal booked his very first road gig.) A few years later, David caught the attention of other touring musicians which led to his first extended professional gig at the Tulsa Hilton Hotel Copa Club with the Los Angeles based singer: Karen Blackwood. As a 19 year old kid from small town, Kansas, David was surrounded my extraordinary musicians from New York, Boston and Las Vegas (all with major musical artists’ performance credits). Immediately from there, he went on tour with international recognized musicians performing in major concert arenas nationwide. (GMA Dove Award recipients) Phillips, Craig and Dean; First Call; NewSong; Larnel Harris; (CMA Country Music Hall of Fame member) Roy Clark; and (jazz legends) Pat Methany and Clark Terry. David gained extensive music industry experience working almost 15 years in the Nashville fringe music community (overworked and underpaid) as a songwriter, guitar picker and music teacher prior to earning his graduate degree and relocating to Kansas City. David has stayed open to musical growth and has enjoyed wide performance opportunities in many areas of pop, jazz, country and classical music (including a May 1, 2011 performance of Vivaldi’s Guitar Concerto in D with the Evangel Temple Christian Center orchestra in Springfield, MO) and leading up to this summer’s causal concert series with the Kansas City Guitar Society. (Another musical highlight involves playing classical rock/blues tunes with his bass playing son, Michael, and the Kansas City based: 2nd Place Band.) As a composer/songwriter, David has premiered works with film/radio production, sanctuary choirs, children‘s groups, instrumental ensembles, and soloists. Since 1994, David has taught leading guitarists worldwide through MidAmerica Nazarene University and introducing others to the world of music with Kansas City Kansas Community College. David’s released CDs include: (available through CDBaby, iTunes, Barnes & Noble, and Lifeway) 1. Tracks Home, 2. Acoustic Christmas Cards, 3. Special Blend, 4. At Long Last Light, 5. Acoustic Christmas Cards 2, 6. Evening in the Lakewood, 7. The Road, 8. Quiet Waters, 9. Unsung Heroes, & 10. Return to the River David plays Taylor, Gibson, Yairi, Lone Star and Samick guitars (Fender amps exclusively) and uses D’Addario, Augustine and LaBella strings
